To be safe at sea you need to be able to communicate effectively in English. In these days of multinational and multilingual crews, the importance of sharing a common language is emphasized by the 2010-amended STCW Convention, which requires that at all times on board ships there shall be effective written and oral communication and that all officers in charge of a watch (navigational or engineering) must have a good command of spoken and written English.

The language competence requirements of the 2010-amended STCW for deck officers include using English

  • to communicate an understanding of legislation, rules and regulations governing safe working practices at sea
  • to demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of teamwork, leadership, communication, decision-making and resource management
  • to explain MARPOL regulations, describe pollution avoidance procedures
  • to communicate an understanding of international regulations, standards, codes and recommendations on the carriage of dangerous cargoes
